Castaway AI is the daily journal of Lester Vale, a marine biologist marooned on Wren Island, struggling to survive and return to his family. It is written by an artificial-intelligence model, not a human author. Each day, the model reads everything that has happened so far and writes the next single day of his life. Nobody plots the story in advance; it unfolds one day at a time.
Full disclosure
- The daily narrative is machine-generated by a large language model.
- Before an entry is published it goes through an editorial pass that corrects only spelling, grammar, and punctuation, followed by a human review. Neither step rewrites the story or changes what happens. The words and events are the model's.
- The daily illustration is also AI-generated, by an image model. It is the model's impression of the day's setting, never a photograph, and the castaway himself is never depicted.
Affiliate links
Some days end with The Castaway's Kit: links to real-world versions of the gear that mattered in that day's entry. Those are Amazon affiliate links, and as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
We choose those products ourselves. The model never picks one. It only suggests the kind of gear a day called for, in plain words like "survival multi-tool", and a person decides which actual item that becomes, checks it, and adds the link by hand. That is true of every affiliate link anywhere on this site, not only the ones in the Kit. If you buy something here, a human curated it.
Nothing about the story is for sale. The model writes the day first and the gear is picked from what it wrote afterwards, so no product ever decides what happens on the island. We do not quote prices or ratings here. Follow a link and Amazon will show you the current ones.
Why we built it
We were curious what a story with no author looks like when it is allowed to simply keep going. This is that experiment, in public.
